IN MEMORY OF HERCULES
IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN E-MAIL, THE MIDDLE OF JULY “I FOUND TWO CATS AT THE SOUTHWIND GOLF COURSE, I CAN’T KEEP THEM, I WANT TO FIND THEM A GOOD HOME”.
I TELL HER WE HAVE NO ROOM FOR ADULT CATS, BUT IF YOU SEND PICTURES WE WILL TRY TO TAKE THEM WHEN WE HAVE SPACE. SO SHE SENDS PICTURES OF THE TWO, SO SWEET LOOKING. I KNOW WE CAN FIND THEM HOMES SO I TELL HER WE WILL TAKE THEM.
WE GET THEM BOTH TESTED FOR FELINE AIDS AND LEUKEMIA, THE TWO THINGS YOU WORRY MOST ABOUT IN CAT RESCUE, BOTH TEST NEGATIVE. THEY BOTH GO INTO A FOSTER HOME FOR A WHILE, WE DIDN’T HAVE ROOM FOR THEM. WHEN WE FINALLY GET THEM TO MEWTOPIA WE CAN TELL ONE IS OLD, WE NAMED HIM HERCULES, WE DON’T KNOW HOW OLD, BUT YOU CAN LOOK AT HIS FACE AND TELL HE IS OLD, BUT SWEET, HE IS SO SWEET, AND LOVES FOR YOU TO HOLD HIM CLOSE, THE OTHER ONE, WE NAMED NERO, HE LOOKS HEALTHY AND IS VERY SWEET, A LITTLE SHY, BUT GOOD NATURED. WITHIN A MONTH OF GETTING HERCULES, YOU CAN TELL SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT, WE MONITOR HIM, YOU CAN’T JUST RUSH THE CATS TO THE VET, WE JUST DON’T HAVE THE RESOURCES. HE GOES TO THE VET FOR A CHECK-UP THE FIRST OF OCTOBER, ALL THE BLOOD WORK TURNS OUT ALRIGHT, THEY SAY HE IS OLD, OVER 10 BUT THEY ARE NOT SURE HOW MUCH OLDER, HE ONLY WEIGHS 7 LBS. HE HAS BAD TEETH, BUT NOTHING UNUSUAL IN HIS BLOOD WORK, JUST A LITTLE ANEMIA. HE CONTINUES TO LOSE WEIGHT, WE TAKE HIM BACK TO THE VET, HE HAS LOST OVER A POUND IN 3 WEEKS, AND THE ULTRASOUND TELLS US HE IS NOT WELL, HE GETS WEAKER AND WEAKER AND HIS BREATHING BECOMES VERY LABORED, HE HAS NO APPETITE AND SEEMS TO HAVE NO WILL TO LIVE. HE SPENT ONE NIGHT AT THE EMERGENCY CENTER, AND THEN HE WENT BACK AND FORTH TO THE VET FOR THREE DAYS, THEY GAVE HIM IV’S AND FORCE FED HIM, THEY ALSO GAVE HIM A STRONG ANTIBIOTIC, I TOOK HIM HOME WITH ME EVERY NIGHT, HE DESERVED SOME SPECIAL ATTENTION. NOTHING SEEMED TO HELP HIM AND I KNEW IT WAS TIME TO LET HIM GO. SO VERY PEACEFULLY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, WE LET HIM REST.
THANK YOU CLOVERLEAF ANIMAL CLINIC FOR YOUR LOVING AND WONDERFUL CARE OF HERCULES.
IN MEMORY OF HOPI
In March, 2007, Hopi and her daughter ChiChi were brought to Mewtopia because their previous owner left town and wouldn't take them with her. We found Hopi and ChiChi a home together but sadly they were returned to Mewtopia in August of 2007. ChiChi found a new home a few months after she came back but Hopi was still waiting. She didn’t really like all the other cats at Mewtopia so she spent most of her days in her cage just taking life easy. We noticed in early January she was not feeling well, she lost a lot of weight and didn’t seem to ever want to eat. She had a little cold so we attributed everything to her illness. When she didn’t get better we took her to the vet, vet care is expensive and not always manageable, we must try everything we can before we take a cat to the doctor. Hopi not only had not been eating, but she was starving herself to death. On January 15 we had a feeding tube put into Hopi, knowing that was the only thing that would save her. She did very well initially, but then she just seemed to give up, we lost Hopi on Saturday, January 19, 2008.
The volunteers who all loved Hopi know that you can’t save every cat from every situation, as hard as we try it just doesn’t always work.
For all the Hopi’s in this world who deserve a family and a home of their own, and hate the life of living in a cage, please, for them, adopt from a rescue group or shelter.
IN MEMORY OF OLIVIA'S KITTENS
Olivia and her kittens were rescued from euthanasia on March 28, 2008. Olivia had a little cold, and Mewtopia gave her and her kids a second chance at life by putting them on a course of antibiotics in a foster home. Mama was strong enough since she was older and had immunity, but her kittens were still so vulnerable and not strong enough to make it. They were in loving care in a foster home and knew the happiness of having a home and human love, if only for a short time. Rescue work can be very emotional, as we cannot save every animal, but we keep trying and find happiness in the ones who are saved and get adopted into their forever homes. Olivia's kids were not meant for this world, but they will always be remembered and loved. Olivia has been adopted and is in a loving home! IN MEMORY OF SQUIGGY
Squiggy got very sick and as hard as the vet tried, they could not save him. Thank you, Park Ave., Animal Hospital for taking such great care of him and loving him until the end.
